Happy and Healthy 2012 to everyone!
I hope everyone had a great holiday season with their loved ones, I know I did!
Of course I’ve been in healing mode still with my injury, turns out it’s gone beyond just the muscle and is affecting the nerve which causes some not so fun inflammation and pain L
However I’m so lucky that I’ve got yoga to help me along with some curcumin to ease the pain and inflammation.
You’re probably like “cur-what?” …Curcumin!
Curcumin is the active ingredient found in turmeric. Turmeric best known as one of the ingredients used to make curry also gives mustard its bright yellow color. Now this active ingredient has serious magic powers …if you read on you’ll see why.
Curcumin's anti-inflammatory effects are as potent as hydrocortisone and phenylbutazone (very strong prescribed anti-inflammatory drugs) as well as over-the-counter anti-inflammatory agents such as Motrin and advil. Unlike the drugs, which are associated with significant toxic effects (ulcer formation, decreased white blood cell count, intestinal bleeding), curcumin produces no toxicity.
Besides being absolutely great for pain management and anti-inflammatory properties here are a few other benefits of curcumin.
o It is a natural antiseptic and antibacterial agent, useful in disinfecting cuts and burns.
o When combined with cauliflower, it has shown to prevent prostate cancer and stop the growth of existing prostate cancer.
o Prevented breast cancer from spreading to the lungs in mice.
o May prevent melanoma and cause existing melanoma cells to commit suicide.
o Reduces the risk of childhood leukemia.
o Is a natural liver detoxifier.
o May prevent and slow the progression of Alzheimer's disease by removing amyloyd plaque buildup in the brain.
o May prevent metastases from occurring in many different forms of cancer.
o It is a potent natural anti-inflammatory that works as well as many anti-inflammatory drugs but without the side effects…. This is what got me started on it J
o Has shown promise in slowing the progression of multiple sclerosis in mice.
o Is a natural painkiller and cox-2 inhibitor.
o May aid in fat metabolism and help in weight management.
o Has long been used in Chinese medicine as a treatment for depression.
o Because of its anti-inflammatory properties, it is a natural treatment for arthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.
o Boosts the effects of chemo drug paclitaxel and reduces its side effects.
o Studies are ongoing in the positive effects of turmeric on multiple myeloma.
o Has been shown to stop the growth of new blood vessels in tumors.
o Speeds up wound healing, and assists in remodeling of damaged skin.
o May help in the treatment of psoriasis and other inflammatory skin conditions
SO if these aren’t enough to get you to add a little yellow to your meals this might be:
Turmeric helps to digest fats by stimulating the flow of bile in the gall bladder and therefore is very effective as a digestive aid and fat-burning compound. Studies also show it is highly effective at reducing the inflammation from Irritable Bowel Syndrome, ulcerative colitis, and Crohn’s disease.
For the heart, it contains strong anti-platelet substances which help prevent the blood from clotting too easily, and so is very effective against heart attacks and strokes. In addition, homocysteine, a chemical component in the body, which is one of the primary predictors of heart attacks, is significantly lowered in the presence of curcumin.
The curcumin in turmeric also has been shown to lower and reduce the oxidation of plaque on the artery walls.
So hopefully I’ve succeeded in relaying this information on turmeric and curcumin to you; you or someone you know might be able to really benefit from it like I have been J
Happy Healthy 2012 to everyone!!!
